In Australia today there has been a lot of publicity about a ten year old aboriginal girl who was raped by 9 males in an aboriginal community. The offenders pleaded guilty, but none received a custodial sentence. Is anyone out there as disgusted as me with this situation? I cannot believe that this type of activity is not treated as the most serious of issues requiring strict punishment ... how desensitised to this type of disgraceful behaviour can we get, and what would be an appropriate sentence for them?

Thought I should clarify that this has nothing to do with tribal law or aboriginal custom. The case was determined (as all are) in the mainstream Australian legal system.

Castration- You abuse it you loose it. It would sure help with repeat offenders. (one of the accused already has a conviction for sexual assult) I believe in long sentences, rehabilitation programs and permanent incarceration for repeat offenders.
I am disgusted too.

The judge has been asked to step down. Ironically you would think a female judge would be more harsh on these men but she wasn't... her comment was that the victim probably did consent. Funny because the age of consent is 16 or 18 depending on where in Australia you are. Children younger than this are not considered ABLE to give informed consent to sexual activity. Her decision may be overruled- an appeal has been launched. see- http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article3032974.ece

Aboriginal custom does not advocate the rape or molestation of children in any case. Unfortunately it seems to be a modern pandemic among remote and not so remote aboriginal communities. (on the other hand it is as rampant in wider Australian population but better hidden)

Firstly I am also an Australian, secondly I am absolutely appalled at this case.
It is beyond comprehension that this case was not deemed important enough and the criminals got off with a slap on the wrist. Had they been white men who raped - there would be outrage. Remember the case of 'middle eastern' guys who gang raped teenager - one guy got 55 years.
I think this country has double standards - I am sick to death of the allowances we make for certain members of our society. Rape of a minor carries heavy penalties and these penalties should apply to each and every citizen.
Wake up Australia - the law is the law and I don't give a crap about being politically correct. The public prosecutors should be ashamed - shame on you and you have to live with your trivialisation of this case. I wonder how many more there are that are not reported.
Children in these communities must be removed from this horrible environment (and NO its NOT another stolen generation) - DOCS removes white kids all the time why is this any different.
Appropriate sentence 55+ years....this case is worse than the one previously mentioned.

I am not familiar with Aboriginal customs and laws. So I can only answer from an American's perspective. Gang rape of a minor would result in the men serving about 15 years in prison.

The judge should be put off the bench. In most of the cultures of the world, it is against the law (or morals or mores) to have sex with pre-pubescent children. Almost anyone in any country in the world would recognize that any child cannot give consent to sex. Adding a decreased cognitive function only increased her inability to give consent. What a travesty!

I cannot believe its not treated with high punishment either. When i read down below the girl said fifteen yrs and they are normally released half the time i say more needs to be done.I say a man made the sentence because he obviously felt they are gonna get away with it.I say make them pay how the girl felt torture them in front of everyone.

Imposition of sentence is outside the realm of the public, and vigilantism is a crime.
It is their community, their culture. Let the tribal elders deal with it.
And the offenders, they will deal with the theft of her innocence forever. As will the victim.
How did this exploitative item come to the western media? Rupert's news corp? Pandering, is it not?

"Kill 'em all, let G_d sort it out."

I agree with those who suggested castration. Lets be civilised and castrate them by a doctor, who knows how to make the process irreversible. When the urge goes, they can not rape again.

It would be death in the deep south of America. An self-respecting family member would put a bullet in their heads and be done with it.

FOREVER in prison. No appeals, no paroll, hard labour. No mercy of any kind. After the forever expires, they start all over again, then they die and rot in hell.
