The Japanese had been planning far in advance to hit there. They did it at the same time as the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The US troops there were a long way from reinforcements and supplies, while the Japanese were fairly close to theirs.

The Japanese military had more experience in combat, at that point, since many of them had been in combat multiple times over the previous few years.
