I frequently find notebook icons popping up on my main computer screen. Under the notebook icons are phrases like hs_err_pid2... When I open the file, it is full of numbers and letters and sometimes I see the word "java" but no explanation.

This is a Java runtime error. What you are opening is the error report file.

Probably an error file generated when you were running a screen with Java script. It is not that uncommon for errors to occur because of different type of hardware. In the help menu you need to look up debug and how to turn off the file generation so it will not give you a desktop icon.
