I heard a song this morning that I haven't heard in years and it immediately triggered memories and emotions of the time when the song was originally being played. Why does music evoke such strong emotions and bring to the surface memories, good and bad, that we tend to forget over time?

ive just fished out my old anatomy and physiology coursework! i cant really answer your question about music but i can tell you about another sense...'smell'.....and why memories and emotional responses are triggered by certain smells.....when smells are inhaled a process leads to the stimulation of nerve impulses, which travel along a route which leads to a part of the brain called the 'olfactory system' olfactory bulbs carry the information to the 'limbic system' which in turn interperets the information it has received from the olfactory bulbs and we then become 'aware' of it and any memories associated with it are 'triggered'....the limbic system deals with all emotions....pain, anger, pleasure, affection etc....and each will be released with the appropriate memory.....like i said, its not answering your question but when you talk of music, obviously that will travel an auditory path, very similar to what i have described and i would imagine leads to the limbic system where all sensory association is 'stored'....i hope that makes some sort of sense to you x

No music won't turn you gay. lol Most people can probably associate different kinds of music with certain times in their personal life. Music has an enormous amount of emotional power. It can soothe and comfort us, it can lift our spirits and energize us, it can also sometimes make us feel depressed and want to cry. It's pretty amazing. If you feel that certain songs are making you feel worse, then just try listening to something else for a change - something happier. Or take a break and do something else for a while. :-)

It happens to me all the time.

But I guess anything old and meaningful brings back old memories.

It's just that things which arouse greater sensations on us are more effective in that regard... (Old and good TV series, such as "Charlie's Angels or "Dallas" are good 'memory time machines' as well for me).

Oh, and Nadia K... No, I don't think Lord Elvis of Paisley is too emotional... I bet you are the one who doesn't enjoy music... Too bad for you... You don't know what you are missing, and how good it is to live past moments in memory again when you listen to old songs...

Our brain thinks differently to each bit of music - it may trigger emotions and stuff like that.
