My mother (single parenting two children) read to us an average of two chapters a night until we were at least 10 or 11. Most of my memories are of her reading various books of Lewis' Narnia series as they came out (I was born the same year as the first was published).

I have enjoyed providing pieces of our Euro-roots as well as Ameri-roots folk tales, legends, and myths to my stepdaughter as she grew from devouring The Breakfast Club books into enjoying and understanding the movie Shakepeare in Love when it hit theaters the summer she was 11.

My own mother gifted me with her own love of books, as well as a treasury of children's literature (as well as popular classical music and similar cultural treasures), and occasional presents such as Norma Lorre Goodrich's retellings of our British heritage myths and legends, from Beowulf to Guinevere and Arthur.

I was not read to as a child, but I do read to my children each night. It's one of the best parts of my day.

yes! My father used to read to me "The Hobbit" and other great children's stories just before I went to sleep.

It help me develop a passion for story telling and the use of the language that I think made school alot easier.

I intend to do the same for my children, if I am lucky enough to be blessed by children :P

i can count (on one hand) the number of times my parent/s red to me as a child. And now you mention it, i don't read to my kids. I have never really thought about it, it obviously wasn't something i grew up with so i suppose i never thought of passing it on... Am i a deprived child???
