This question is mostly directed toward Muslims and Jews, but anyone with something intelligent to say may respond. I am Muslim, but I just do not understand why these people (who are devout in there belief in GOD) have been fighting for so long, and I do kind of understand the land issue, but from the knowledge I have it does not make sense. Anyone have any insights please expound.
(No religious slander or hate speech will be tolerated in a response or you will be flagged.)

If the Arab world had not rejected Partition back in 1947/8, then today there would already be a Palestinian state existing alongside Israel.
The Jews living in Palestine agreed unconditionally to Partition despite their being allotted the far smaller piece of land. The Arab world went beserk, and declared war: within 12 hours of Israel officially being declared a state SEVEN Arab armies attacked Israel.
This is verifiable, historical fact.
The Palestinians were ordered to flee by the Arab leaders and, understandably scared, they did so. The Arab nations promised them a swift return once 'all the Jews have been pushed into the sea!'
But by some miracle the Israelis managed to hang on and defend their tiny new state. That's how they got some bits of land that were not originally theirs.
Since then, Israel has returned the Sinai and now Gaza, in a desperate bid to establish peace. She has a peace treaty with Egypt, and with Jordan.
But in Gaza, the Palestinians voted Hamas in as their representatives; Hamas is now busy launching rocket attacks on Israeli towns like Sderot - already many Israelis have died.
And what does Israel do? She gives Gaza free water, fuel and electricity! Because she does not want the non terrorist Palestinians to suffer!
Israel takes up 0.01% of the middle east.
There are 22 Muslim countries.
Israel longs for peace, but it's fairly clear that Hamas and Islamic Jihad are not interested. Indeed, the Hamas Charter specifically states it does not agree nor support any peace talks and that it desires the total destruction of Israel.
NOTE TO EARLIER ANSWER
How is Israel a 'racist' country? Anybody, of any religion, can live there and become a citizen! Some 30% of Israeli citizens are not Jewish. Muslims sit in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament! Israel is a democracy.
EDIT TO ASKER
It is spelled 'Palestine' in fact. ~And it was never a country, it was a region; the term 'Palestinians' referred to all that lived there: Jews, Muslims, Christians. It was called Judea, but then the Romans conquered it and renamed it Palestine, after the Philistines, to try and sever the link between the Jewish people and their historical link to the region.
Again, this is all historical, verifiable fact.

Well the Palestinian Charter stated that one of their goals was to drive the Jews into the sea. Now they may have reworded it. But the mentality is still there.
People that occupied the territory known as Palestine have moved around alot. Or at last many of them have.
some were ejected from Kuwait for causing trouble, some were ejected from Jordan for causing trouble, they were pushed out of Lebanon for fighting with the Lebanese militia.
I see a people ( I am sure they are not all this way, but enough of them ) that are determined to have their way and to hell with everyone else. Thats what history tells me.
I honestly do not see peace in that area happening.
I am not saying that Israeli government has always acted appropriately to them. But remember the offer .
Remember when PM Barak offered Arafat almost all of gaza, almost all of the west bank and the palestinian occupied neighborhoods in jerusalem and Arafat turned it down.
Then the next year admidst fighting US Senator Mitchell urged a cease fire, which Israel did but Palestinians continued with violence.
draw your own conclusion but ive seen enough to draw one.

Isaac and Ishmael. And, no, there will never be peace in that region on this side of Heaven. God promised the land to Abraham's seed. Abraham and Sarah disobeyed God, and Abraham had a child with Sarah's hand maiden who was Egyptian, Hagar, a baby named Ishmael. But, Ishmael was not the promised son, Isaac was, Abraham's son with Sarah. So, Ishmael and Isaac have been fighting ever since. Their lineage and the reasons why and whom has occupied the land ever since can be found in the Bible.

There's a hardcore on both sides who would not trust the other enough to honor a complete peace treaty. It would be too easily derailed by such people, sadly.
