It prepares the tree to go into hibernation mode for the winter as the tree consumes more energy maintaining the leaves.

autumn=less sunlight
hence leaves cannot make much food
so as to survive, they shed their leaves. This way, there will be less places in the tree to send food to. (i.e. the tree just basically sends food to its branches, roots and trunk. not to the million other leaves....)
its the same thing as...
one point of time u have a lot of money (sunlight) so u have a lot of food. hence, u can give food to all of your kids (leaves)
but den u might get poor (less sunlight) so den u dun have enough food....so u just kill the kids (shed the leaves)

Because they change their old leaves into new ones. It will help their body fresh throughout the year.

because the cells in the petiole die and that is how the leaf is attached
