Cucumbers are the most common type of vegetable to be pickled in mass quantities in the United States. Anything steeped in vinegar and salt is pickled. I really love pickled squash, but I've never had it in the states.

pickles are cucumbers that have been 'pickled'. this means that they will survive longer without going bad

They are pickled in the vinegar and spices, but they don't start off that way. They are damn good though!!
