At the moment, I have 2 Husky mix dogs and a cat. There have been up to 4 dogs and 3 cats in our household simultaneously. Obviously we need a good vacuum. Our house has 2 levels, so a lightweight vacuum is a bonus when it comes to doing stairs, especially. We have both carpets and bare floors. I've decided to buy a new Oreck. I have a 20 year old OreckXL. I think it's safe to say, its sucked up hundreds of pounds of dog fur. Still works great, but I'm passing it on to a friend who can't afford anything else right now. I have tried a Dyson Animal. A friend, who has 4 dogs and 4 cats, owns one. She's so-so about it and I was not impressed when I tried it. She has short-haired dogs and it just doesn't seem to pick it up thoroughly. She also said she has difficulties with the attachments, feels like she has to use too much force getting them on and off, is always afraid something's going to break. She said she wishes she'd taken my advice and bought an Oreck instead. At any rate, I am convinced my old Oreck outperforms it and going for a new one! Pricey, but if I get another 20 years out of it, I think it's worth the initial investment. Based on retail price, it averages out to about $35 a year.

I love my Meile canister vac. Lightweight powerhouse variable speeds. Quiet too. I can even vacuum when the baby sleeps. Not Cheap, but well worth the money.

The Simplicity is a good vacuum. Lightweight durable, the filtering system is good and the attachments are on board. There are different models and I have one in my own home.

I like Bissel. They're cheap and easy to work on when it becomes necessary. Fairly light weight, and as far as cheap vacuums, they work fairly well. (Did I mention that they're cheap?)
