On the playgroud at school, my buddies and I would pretend to be The Fantastic Four. For some reason, I chose Johnny Storm because he could shoot fire and fly through the air and I thought that was cool.
And although she was not really considered a "hero" as most people would consider, I loved Mary Poppins with hero-type worship for all her great magic she could perform and her great way with children (and who was ever baby sat who didn't want a nanny like Mary Poppins?). Like a lot of idiot kids that age, we climbed on the roof with an umbrella when grown-ups weren't looking and very much wanted to jump off to see if we could float down like Mary. Fortunately, instinct kicked in and broke through that movie-inspired childhood fantasy and I never actually jumped off the roof or I might likely have broken a leg or ankle. I remember how sad I was that real life couldn't be like the movies. But at least in my dreams, I could fly.
