DON'T CLEAN IT. Seriously, collectors don't want clean coins - they want authentic coins that look like their age.
Try ofering it for sale as it is. Good luck!

I guess you live in the Great Britain, the 50 pence from 1973 and up even the commemorative's are worth only a few dollars here, a Pound or so there. Now that is for the normal uncirculated type. The Proofs of those coins have a much higher value for some are made of silver. The proof one had to be bought from the Royal Mint at that time. GB has such a rich heritage when it comes to coins I think you can do better by getting a book and collecting the older coins. there are a lot of collectors of British coins here in the States, for they were legal tender until 1857 in this country. The 50 Pence that commemorate things, are nice to have also, for they refresh one memories of the past.

Anything which has a mild acid content will clean the dirt off coins without harming them. These best, therefore, is vinegar in a water solution, say 15/85. By the number of answers here recommending Coca Cola, you can see that it is acidic!

Get a glass of vinegar or coca cola. Add regular table salt and mix. (The salt speeds up the process!)
Put your pennies in the vinegar or the coke
Leave them over night in the glass of vinegar or coke
In the morning take them out and wash them. Let them dry. Tada! You have shiny and clean pennies!
