I feel all important celebrations should be honoured in schools, Duwali, Christmas, Kwanza etc, at the end of the day though Christmas shouldn't be sacrificed at the expense of other religious celebrations, it's just important for kids of other religions to learn about Christianity as it is for Christians to learn about other religions, remember folks, Ignorance is not Bliss!

Mandy I don't think I'd go that far, I just think it's equally important for people to respect each others religions regardless of their own personal beliefs!

I agree too. No other country in the world would downplay their own traditional celebrations at the risk of offending people of other nationalities or faiths. And I don't honestly believe people of other religions etc are offended, I think it's all just PC rubbish.

Oh! Yes.
I was born in a Christian Country (ENGLAND) to Christian parents on Christmas Eve and called Christine.
I now live in Wales and the little ones are having their Nativity Play tomorrow -Nanny Chris will be there as usual !
I mentioned in another answer this week that probably the best Nativity play was 2 years ago when it was introduced by the one Chinese Boy IN WELSH -fabulous !
However, just down the road the school have banned the kids bringing in ham sandwiches in case it upsets anyone -WHAT? -it's the Catholic School!!!
My cousin lives opposite a Sikh family who run the corner shop. They have all been best friends for 30+ years and celebrate each other's Religious festivals.
Our local taxi driver is a Muslim and I asked him if Christmas bothered him in any way . He said he and his family LOVE Christmas and all it represents -the only thing that bothers him is the fact that the 'Christians' he picks-up after their work's do's etc seem to have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas when they are being ill in his taxi at 2am !
The more someone tells me I shouldn't acknowledge Christmas, the more lights go up OUTSIDE as well as inside my house !

I agree completely as well whip. As you know I run The Beaver Scouts and have 24 little 6-8 year olds. At any one time I can have a couple of Muslims, Hindu's or Jewish Children. When I know their Religion is Celebrating an important event such as say Diwali I plan our evening activities around that. It gives the others chance to learn about their friends culture etc etc and I've never had any complaints about this from any of the other parents. We are now a Multi Faith Country and if you respect others they will respect yours.

im sorry but
its called CHRISTmas for a reason!
you cant ban a holiday
i hate how the muslim community are being put first
in all circumstances
its a time to celebrate the birth of jesus
you cant change it
everyone should respect one and anothers religions
including atheists, dont tear a religion down because you dont believe in it
i completely 100% agree with this, muslims and other religious communitys should not get priority for their beliefs over a holiday which has been running for a very long time

I love this story. I agree whole heartedly.
But.........I have to disagree on afew answers.
It is very much a reality, as much as we don`t want it to be, nativity plays have been stopped. Hot cross buns banned.
etc.
I don`t want to believe it either, but its happened.
This has all happened in a 15 mile radius of my home.
My family have been affected by it enormously.
We have to reinstate the whole of Christmas back into the schools, then most people would be happy to get on with their lives without the prejudice that they feel.
A prejudice that is warranted at the moment.
But it is good to hear positive things like this in the media.
Makes a refreshing change, Thanks.

Absolutely, it's a time for Celebration.
Although in my opinion Christmas has become too commercialised, a money making exercise.
Emphasis should be put on traditional values, relating
to Our Christian Heritage.
I bet , Henry V111 would not have quibbled about these
sentiments ?

about time someone finally spoke some sense
I have just moved to an new area and i am amazed that my daughters school are doing a nativity
she is six and never evr seen one so it is not a myth .. we have had the grumpy elf .. the snowman .. the grinch etc and not once a nativity
I am made up as the nativity play is what christmas is all about
We should be able to celebrate the meaning of christmas without fear of upsetting someone .
we live in a multicultural society and in order for there to be harmony we have to respect and uphold individual traditions
Where i used to live last christmas we had no christmas lights as our local council did not wish to offend
Surely this act in itself can stir up negative emotions and create tensions

Absolutely. People should stop following these ridiculous "politically correct" notions that people of other faiths will be upset if we as Christians celebrate Christmas and the nativity etc. If everyone just ignored the government and local councils regarding this there would be little that they could do. I, for one will never bow down to the PC morons.

The PC, "thou shalt not risk offending others" brigade are the ones we should be venting our frustrations upon.
It is time we stood up to them - people of other faiths would never put up with any attempt by the PC brigade to stop them holding their religious festivals.

I went to Catholic maintained, so wasn't an issue.
I've no problem with learning about other faiths, just do not try to make me say their prayers.
