I agree, the two are often incompatible.
Some theists argue that the bible says we have free-will since we can 'choose' to 'obey' or 'disobey' God, but I don't believe that.
But how can you 'choose'?
The Judeo-God (and most others), basically say, do it my way, or you'll get whats coming to you---usually some variation of torture/death/hell.

"Draw nigh to me and I will draw nigh to you." James 4:8
"Wash your heart from evil, O Jerusalem, That you may be saved." Jeremiah 4:14
"Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Return to Me, says the LORD of hosts, that I may return to you.'" Zechariah 1:3
"And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure." 1 John 3:3
The problem is "solved" by noting that each one elects election by drawing nigh to God with clean hands and a pure love, and that this is accomplished by the Holy Spirit, Who draws nigh as one draws nigh--this is clearly a mutual, reciprocal process, a "chicken and egg" dichotomy only for those who are not in the Spirit or seeking the Spirit in faith by drawing nigh.
Perhaps you were "predestined" by "headucation" or some bias not to encounter the above quotes? There are other quotes, as well, but theologic is quite state-specific, i.e., the discernment of the Word is dependent upon the soul's resonance with the Spirit.
"Free will" is a God-given ability to make right choice in the Edenic or Mystery School. It is properly termed "ability to make choice;" the "as gods" arrogation of additional "ability to make wrong choice" is what mortals too often term "free will." It is neither Free, as God is Freedom, nor is it of the One Ego, One Mind Soul-individuation, but is erring, mortal willfulness.
Oneness with the One is Self-realization (vide the first two commands: the greater sphere, "Love God completely," encloses the second, "and love colleague as Self"--i.e., Self-realization, "letting this Mind abide with you"--occurs when one is in Love with God completely).
There is no such thing as predestination; rather, God intends all to be saved, but His standards do not change, He does not "grade on a curve." Hence, "He saves whom He Wills," which is equivalent to being a gatekeeper in Heaven, in One Mind Soul, not outside the Law of the One. He would that all God-created souls be saved, but some "would not be as chicks;" thus there was free will even re Christ's mission, "but they would not"...hence, the Crucifixion was the "only Way" the Ascension in the Light could be demonstrated for even an unwilling Chosen People. While foreseen, the people yet had the ability to choose otherwise...but they "would" not.
cordially,
j.

because the bible isnt literal, and is connected to religion which requires faith instead of proof...if there was support for a religious belief then it would be proven and become fact...
and actually, there is no where in the bible that suggests that you don't have the choice to choose to believe in God or not believe in Him...so that is a gesture of free will...
actually john 15 is about Him asking us to remain (on the vine)...this presumes that we have the choice...
He states that He chooses us, but that is in reference to His commandment...Love one another as He loves us...
the judeo/christian God (and others) promise maladies if they are not followed, however that does not remove the choice (even if you did believe them to be telling the truth)...the choice remains...

There is only "The WILL". What we call free-will is merely the choice to know "The WILL" or not!
