Unfortunately nowdays there are not so many traditions applicated in the big cities, just in the province of Greece..
The way of life, and the modernisation, have abolished some of the Christmas traditions..As you can see, after the entrance of the new year, the majority of young people leave the house to go out for entertainmet with their friends. The only thing applied in the majority of the greek families, is the cut of the new year cake, the dinners between relatives and friends...
The opposite in the provinces where children andadults go to sing ''kalanta'''in the houses of neighbours, and in this case they receive them with sweets and candies...
These traditions are very particular in islands, or in the north part of Greece

Well I'm pretty sure I don't know half of the traditions, since my mom is not Greek and we always celebrated in a mixed way(Greek and Dutch Xmas traditions). What I like is the kalanta(even though fewer and fewer kids come each year to actually sing them),the cookies(even though i don't like them),the cutting of the Xmas cake and the whole sensation of who will get the flouri and have a lucky year(which isn't true as I got it both this year as the previous and none of those can be described as lucky, lol) and of course the biggest tradition of all:Watching the Sound of music on whatever tv channel chooses to air it this year, lol I've been watching it for as long as I can remember, lol.Even though they did air it last Easter,so I do hope they won't neglect it this year(it's kinda the same as watching Jesus of Nazareth the whole week before Easter,it won't be Xmas without it :))

My favorite tradition is the Christmas carols, that you hear these days everywhere in Athens. And of course the chrismas cookies that mothers and grandmothers make, much better that the ones you buy from the stores.

I love the fact that the whole family gathers once a year on Christmas Day and we all have lunch together. There are little things that I still enjoy, like the carols-which has already been mentioned-, the baking of kourabiedes and melomakarona-I'm a terrible cook, but still I try!-the fact that we turn off the lights to welcome the New Year, bands and choirs playing and singing Christmas songs on the street, the colours, the lights, the smell of everything...
