A lot of American or European celebrities are upfront about their being atheists (Paul Giamatti, Penn and Teller, Woody Allen, Steven Soderberg etc). I was wondering if there were any popular Filipino who admitted to not beleiving in (a) God?

I must thank JP for giving me an idea. It is him who mentioned the CPP. Therefore, I propose the most prominent member thereof: Jose Ma. Sison.

May I also add something I read, the character was Philipp Carey, and when he finally admitted to himself that he was an atheist, he was so relieved he said: "Thank God I do not believe in You anymore."

The Philippines' national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was an atheist. And there are others like him, in the past and even today.

In Rizal's case, he turned atheist because of the bad examples the Spanish friars showed the Filipino people; it didn't have anything to do about his not believing in God. But it was more of the attitudes and the tyrannical ways those priests had over the people. It somehow disillusioned him about the Church and the so-called men of God.

yeah, I had a friend before....as for someone popular...Imee Marcos was being interviewed on TV and she was being asked about God or if she believed in a God and she kept saying that it's good to believe in a God and kept avoiding the question coz she said that she majored in religions or something...she's probably an agnostic though

of course... there are few Filipino atheists but they are not active because the Filipino mainstream society is dominantly a believer. this is visible in the media, in the office, in the classroom, and everyday life.

aside from the societal norms, there are few athiests because Filipinos, being molded by the family and society and experience, are naturally believers.

I think so, but unlike Western countries who are very open to admit that they atheist or non conformist, were not like them, we are so afraid of ridicule, avoidance from other people especially our family and we might get hurt or killed by religious Fiipino people hehe!

To answer your first question ... yes definitely.

For your second question, i beg to differ from the guy above me. There ARE Filipinos who are known internationally but none have claimed to be atheists so far.

We had an atheist once before but he died and went to hell...ha ha. No it's rare for some one, especially public figure to stand up and say something like that. To me make a big deal about it on TV or news is like going on TV to say you're not in love with (name anyone you want). I mean we don't need to make exclusions in society. I don't need to go up to girls in my school and say, oh, just so you know, I don't like to go out with you. Or we don't need to not invite people to our wedding by sending out a non-invitation notice. It's just silly to proclaim what we don't believe in, when there is so much.
