corrupt politicians and welfare mentality.
I lived there before Katrina- it has the potential to be an interesting city but sinful lifestyles justified, low expectations and prejudiced politicians who care for nothing more than their own pockets while masquerading as caring about racism and the poor keep the city in a state of oppression.

And as for the "parties " and glamorization of the city- it is a fascade- the city is dirty and stinks like human feces and puke ( and that is not a mean exaggeration - it is the truth).

As for the people who were out there waiting for so long to be helped- yes there were many that needed the help, but there were many who could have helped themselves and would not- A friend of mine is a police officer there and during this time of "need" they could not go out to help people as freely as they would have liked to for fear of their lives- people on the streets shooting at police officers, shooting at the people coming inthe helicopters, defying authority and making it harder for those that were helping to actually do their job- they did not show all that on CNN.

People that were not there only got their stories from the biased media- why don't you ask the police officers and the Red Cross and the soldiers that were putting their lives on the line to help and ungrateful, violent group of people- no not all were like this and unfortunately a lot of good people suffered for the idiots - but there were enough of them and enough idiotic behavior to make things worse than they should have been.

Oh fun, Mardi Gras, Rock and Bowl, Bourbon St., the Maple Leaf, Cafe Du Monde, drive through daiquiris, Cafe Degas, hush puppies, Lake Ponchatrian, Gentilly, O'Brien's, history, hurricanes (the drink), beads, cups, the French Quarter, music, and voodoo, oh and pralines....and LOTS OF GOOD FOOD! Too much fun there! And the democrat panacea that it proved not to be.

The coolest place I have ever been. Night, decay, Nine Inch Nails, Anne Rice, Bourbon Street Vampires, Strippers, Spanish & French influenced arcitecture, oldness, death, the muddy and golden Mississippi River....a true feeling of age and history. The most amazing place I have ever been and I have been there many, many, many times. As Tom Waits once said:

"I wish I was In New Orleans"

Seeing as how it is only an hour or so down the road... I think of history, great culture, great food, the Saints, blues music, zydeco, Cafe du Monde. Then I also think of driving through the city post-Katrina and seeing my friends houses with flood lines and mold to the ceiling. I also think of Mardi Gras, great concerts, the House of Blues, and Bourbon Street!
