Michael Vick should have been given the opportunity to agree to forgo half his contract salary to benefit injured and abused animals across the USA, along with 10 years community service to helping those same animals with fund raisers that directly benefit their keep! Michael Vick sitting in jail at the tax payers expense benefits no one! He should have been made to help his victims (Dogs) who are found to be abused by others doing the same cruelty with his money and celebrity status! Why not? Sending him to prison does not help these animals in need!

The inmates run the prisons and come out worse than they went in....those of us who have worked on a correctional institution know what really goes on! The general public has no idea! Michael Vick's money could have helped other animals...now they get nothing and fighting dogs continues in the USA! Animal rights groups having the needed money to expose this tragic foolishnesss could have went a long way in putting a stop to it! For all you people who believe prison is hard...try going into the military, be put in harms way and told try to survive the best you can, with what you have. Prisons are hotels...dorms with all the benefits! You people who believe Michael Vick is going to go without in prison are sadly mistaken!

What does it matter? Either way people are going to complain that justice was not served.

Because he broke the law. If you never heard of this man, and he wasn't a big celebrity, you wouldn't care. For once, money and celebrity didn't get the man out of paying for his crimes. Maybe someone who could be making the same mistake as Vick will not do so, after seeing what will happen in the long run. Maybe some dogs will be spared this despicable outcome. Maybe some future athlete will see what happens when they keep low-life people around them. They suck up the money and turn on you the first chance they get. Michael Vick is being made an example of. Hopefully his supporters will see this as a learning experience and not make the same mistakes. I think he would want to be a roll model for making better choices. There, that's his compensation.

Michael Vick, commited crimes, which were illegal and morally reprehensible. He has shown no remorse, and complete disrespect for the legal system, and the law. He lied to authorities, he tried to cover up his involvement, he abused and killed innocent animals. He was found guilty of obstruction of justice, abuse of animals and illegal gambling.

He's actually getting off lightly, because of his celibrity status. Only 23 months, of what could have been a 5 year sentence, a token fine of $5000, and only 3 years of probation (should have been the full 5 years).

He should also be banned for life, from the NFL. He is a miserable example to children, and should not be put in a position, of respect.

Actually, the other guys that were arrested with Vick (Quanis Phillips and Purrnel Peace) got 21 and 18 months respectively. And actually, the facts show that Vick has no money with which to help himself, much less dogs. He defaulted on a $2.5 million loan at a Canadian bank and has yet to pay the $950k that he owes the Government for caring for his dogs. Jail is the only place for Vick. No one can say he got off easy for being a celebrity because the judge gave more than the plea bargain recommended. Plus, its hard to get creative sentences like the one you suggested to stick.

Because he was involved/funded an illegal activity which is a felony. When you commit a felony, you go to jail. Actually, it does help the animals by him going to jail, because how many more dogs would he have been involved with injuring and/or killing. Oh yeah, he also LIED about it in the beginning of the court hearings before finally pleading guilty. That is called perjury, which is also a felony, punishable by jail time. In my mind, he did not get enough time behind bars. Just a thug...hopefully he never makes it back to the NFL...too bad though, he pissed away his athletic ability by playing with dogs...stupid

Since the government brought the suit, the idea is rehabilitating and punishing. Hitting him in his bank account won't hurt him nearly as much as putting him in jail for a while. Sadly, you're right, it doesn't do much to help the animals, but people injured by him can bring a civil suit and get money from him that can be used for those purposes.

So you mean to imply that people should be able to buy their way out of consequences for their actions. All to often, celebrities don't recieve the same treatment as the rest of us in society because of their weatlh. I, for one, was glad to see that he was treated just like anyone else in this situation. He's a thug and all his money can't change that fact.

So according to you, anyone that has broken laws should be out on the streets, since it doesn't help anyone to have them in prison, either you are living in a secluded forest,or you're naive as hell

the system runs its course. woulda shoulda coulda has nothing to do with it once an indictment has been returned and you are charged with a crime. the system takes over and you pay your dues, if convicted. vick is taking his punishment like a man, and your scenario was never, and will never be, an option.
