I would start with the short story collections, like "Night Shift" or "Nightmares and Dreamscapes."
You don't really need to read any of the novels in order, except the Gunslinger books. Just read what appeals to you. I would say that a few of my favorites, meaning I reread them frequently, include "It," "Salems Lot", "Pet Sematary", and "The Stand."
I would save "The Stand" for a bit later in your reading, as it is very long and very deep. It's not a good starter novel. If you want one that will make you want to keep the lights on at night, go with "Pet Sematary." That's a fun one which still scares the heck out of me, despite the fact that I have read it at least a dozen times. I am also very fond of "It," but it, too, is a bit long for a starter. Stick with the shorter ones to begin with.
And don't forget the Bachman books! "Thinner" is one of the best stories of its kind ever written, and "The Long Walk" which is now available on its own, is also a very good read.
You also absolutely have to read "The Green Mile." It is not a horror story, but it is one of the best stories ever written, and it's one which requires tissues on hand. It's really beautiful.
The great thing about Stephen King is the guy just has a great imagination and the skills to write down all the crazy stuff that comes out of his head. You really can't go wrong when picking one of his more popular books. I have read books by him that I will never read again because they bored me, but that's pretty rare. Stick with the well-known titles until you are used to his style, and you should do fine.

My favorite is the final book in the Dark Tower series. As for his other works I love The Shining, The Dead Zone and The Stand. His early novels are best. Also loved The Green Mile. I have read a few of the stories in Nightmares and Dreamscapes and I don't think they are his best work. They are not as good as Night Shift or Everything's Eventual.

Oh my gosh - he is an amazing author - just grab a book and start reading! Dolores Clairborne and Gerald's Game have a small connection. Dolores and the women in Gerald's Game share a vision.
His son has written a book that is just as great as his - Joe Hill - The Heart Shaped Box. Amazing book!

I agree that his books are very interesting and well written but i have only read two in full because i am such a big pussy. I have read black house and cujo, of the two, i would say that black house was way better even though it was 800pages.
If you haven't yet read them, i also suggest hearts in atlantis, secret window and dreamcatcher, all which have been made into feature films..

The Shining was the scariest! It kept me up at night and I wouldn't go into a dark room alone. LOL But my favorite is Bag of Bones! I loved the love story in it but it was still spooky.

The Shining. It was the first SK book I read. I was about 11 or 12 and it scared the crap out of me.
