'm sure everyone is familiar with tapes. If you're not then let me illuminate you, they are cartridges with a ribbon (of magnetic material) wound around a spindle or reel. The purpose of tapes is to store data, in what form is dependent on the type of tape being used. So we have tapes to store computer data, audio tapes that store music and the like and video tape used to store movies and the like http://www.tape4backup.com

LTO stands for: Linear Tape Open and is a specification for cartridge data reliability. Data cartridges are used in Tape Backup devices, in business, to back up all their servers DAILY, because any loss of data is catastrophic.

TIP: Home users don't need and can't afford. this kind of equipment. But, home users should do daily backups, too.

The best way is Copy & Paste to:

1. External hard drive (Size varies)

2. DVD RW (4.7GB)

3. CD RW(700MB)

Just choose the media that exceeds the amount of data to be backed up.

lto stands for linear tape open. it's a tape format that was developed by a consortium of storage vendors who basically didn't like the idea that one company (quantum) had a monopoly on the tape storage market. lto is an excellent medium for keeping your backups on. the media have a slightly smaller footprint than dlt/sdlt, and are far more reliable. definitely not for the home user due to the cost, though. since the cost-per-megabyte of disk storage is relatively cheap these days, a lot of companies use disk arrays for their near-term storage & lto tape for long-term. i can tell you from professional experience, in comparison, dlt/sdlt sucks (but, not as bad as ait). the drives are problematic & the media are too shock-sensitive. quantum tried to keep up w/ lto but lost that battle. they saw the writing on the wall. that's why they decided to jump on the bandwagon by buying certance (formerly a division of seagate). in fact, if i remember correctly [too lazy to google it], seagate, hp, & ibm make up the lto consortium.

LTO Tape drives are a certain tape drive backup technology. It is an older technology and your better off going with DLT or SDLT drives. They are faster and cheaper.
