According to the articles I've been reading on MSNBC, 2008 will be the bottom of the barrel for real estate prices...dropping anywhere from 15% to 40% from the peak of the 2004-2005 timeframe. 2009 should be the beginning of increases and 2010 should be the first full year of increases and the return of stability to the real estate market.

Much depends on where you live. Contrary to popular opinion, much of the nation is not in any sort of a major real estate crisis. I live in Wisconsin, and we have seen less than ten percent price drops from the highs of a few years back. Prices at this time are stable and not expected to drop significantly further.

Some areas of the nation are still experiencing a real estate boom, with prices still on the rise. Yet other areas are right down in the pits, with substantial drops (30%+) from previous highs, and little end in sight to the problem.

You should guide yourself by the area in which you are considering action regarding real estate. You might find a picture quite different from that which you near on national news.
