is there a copyright on the characters/story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?

the story is public domain in its original version. many studios have made cartoon films and illustrated story books of this. however, the characters as drawn by disney are trademarked, so any illustration of this story cannot use characters that appear to be like the disney ones without permission.

There is on the Disney version, but I'm pretty sure there isn't one on the storyline, since it's several hundred years old.
