I want to buy a pad of "nice" paper for someone that is getting back into drawing portraits after a 40 year sabbatical.

This is all I know....they use pencil (a combination of hard for the rough outline, and soft ones for shading)...and they like to do them sort of large - thats all I was able to get out of him details wise {he mentioned that he was thinking about getting back into it while he is recovering from cancer - he hasn't done it since he was in highschool} - anyhow.....

I bought 14x17 inch 90 pound Medium tooth paper in "classic cream" (which if you ask me, looked very much like the white - but I'm no expert on the topic, ha ha)

Is this suitable for this application? or do you have another suggestion?

I was going to pair it with a picture frame and matt as a Xmas gift for someone who is literally impossible to shop for....

Thanks everyone - all input greatly appreciated.

I know - I should have asked before I bought it - but I didn't think of that when I was passing by an arts supply store, ha ha

Very thoughtful. Very nice paper. You did good. He may be even reluctant to start on that kind of paper because of fear to mess it up. :)

Best of luck.

All types of paper are a little different, so really it's just personal preference. Even if he's never used that type of paper he might end up liking it if he tries it, so it should be fine!

If in doubt, consider getting him something like a gift certificate to an art supply store.
