Three things that will survive a nuclear holocaust. Cockroaches, Twinkies, and store bought fruit cake. And the roaches will stay away from the third item.

Seriously, unopened it will probably last for a very long time. Opened, say a week or two before there is a possibility of mold, though it will go stale before then.

But if you truely want a good fruit cake, make it yourself well in advance of the holiday and add a little rum or brandy to it. And keep adding a little every few days, giving the cake plenty of time to absorb the last bit you added. Trust me, I hate fruit cake, but my mom tried this a few years ago and it was actually good. Nice and rich in flavor. Just don't eat a big slice at any given time as you could well get drunk off it.

True story.

When I worked in a pub, the manager ran across some huge bricks of fruitcake down in the cellar. They'd been down there, unopened, for EIGHT YEARS!!! When the chef suggested they be thrown away, the owner insisted that "they get better as they age" and promptly opened one up and cut it up for everyone to try. It actually did taste fine, and no-one got sick. The owner took the rest of them home.
