You get it in the arm muscle. It is just like any other shot. The side effects can be very very nasty for lots of women and can even be debilitating. Also if you stop it it can take a year or more for your body to get back to normal as the effects can last that long. As a nurse I have seen to many bad effects from it and would never recommend it but I know lots of posters on here do well with it.

Here are a few websites that should give you all the info you need about the shot. Very imforative.
http://www.plannedparenthood.org/birth-control-pregnancy/birth-control/the-shot.htm
http://www.birth-control-comparison.info/bcdepo.htm
http://www.epigee.org/guide/shot.html
Look at those websites...consider all your options carefully first.
I am on it right now. I have been on it for 4 years now. I like it. I am getting off of it and getting an IUD due to the fact that the longer your on the depo the higher your risks go up for known things it causes..like bone loss and such.
Side effects for me are...sore arm...I only have a period now for a week four times a years or so.
Cost..around 50 dollars..US.
It is given in ONLY two places...your arm(some doctors won't give it there though) and your hip.
I have never had any problems from it. I never gained any weight..never had any period problems...just kept getting less and less periods is all. I love it. VERY EFFECTIVE. Me and my bf haven't had to use a condom in three years now. That is only okay though if you are like us...otherwise STDs are still a very real risk...the shot doesn't protect against those.

I have known quite a few woman that have taken it. The side effects that they had were horrible. A few of them bleed constantly (one did for 10 months with only one shot. She never took the other ones) and lost way too much weight. Three other ones did not have a period at all and gained a lot of weight. More than fifty pounds.

It's horrible!! I know that some people like it but it was horrible for me. I was on it for 2 years, I gained a TON on weight and was soooo moody. I have now been off it for 2 years and haven't been able to get pregnant yet. The ONLY good thing about it was I didnt have a period for 3 years! The whole 2 years I was on it and then a year afterwards . It didn't hurt to get the injection and it was about $30 a shot for me... I got the injection in my butt.

I don't know who gave it in the arm but I got mine in my butt!!! And yes it did hurt and it felt like forever getting a needle stabbing in your butt. My ob/gyn had it there at the office and I paid like $80 for it. Some recommend that you go to the pharmacy and pay for it and then take it back to the doctor to administer the medication. I had 2 shots of it and got off as soon as I could... I had constant spotting for 6 months straight! I hated it but I've heard its great for some people... just not me.

Mine was in my hip/butt area. It was a horrible experience. I had the worse cramps of my life, the most bleeding I have ever had, and I gained 30 pounds. I was balled up on the floor for two days.
