Well, forever is based on some notion of time. You could speculate how the concept of enduring for all time might have arisen. Particularly in a world of constant change.

We scale our human life as less than 100 years. The universe is scaled at millions and millions of years. We work with vastly different understanding of time in our reality. Forever is a concept we can dream up and as far as our short lifespan goes, the universe seems like it was here forever and will be here forever figuratively. We can't number forever but as far as we understand, some things are deemed so precious they should last "forever" and we express it endearingly in this way.

Perhaps "forever" is not applied to a thing, but rather applied to a notion or idea which is a thought that does last forever. Before a thing can manifest, there must first be the idea or imagination which lasts "forever".

I'm not sure who said the phrase but I'm sure they meant that nothing lasts forever in it's present form. Energy shifts and changes and it may go on ad infinitum in some shape or form. The soul may last forever by taking different bodies and reincarnating frequently, although each body will ultimately die and decompose.

nothing lasts forever, the conditions are keep changing and changing, make people need to be adaptable for the new environment, new people, new things around, that is quite harsh for losing some precious relationships, like family, love, friendship, etc. we could not control them maintain stay for the same, so need to adapt the different, the changed. It is tough, just try to avoid the sadness.

To state that things can't last "forever." Without forever, how would we say they don't last that long?

Forever is needed to compare something finite too.
And stuff does last forever, according to the laws of conservation of energy, energy is neither created nor destroyed, thus it is forever.
