Abraham Lincoln (elected 1860)

Your question is meaningless. The two parties, Democrat and Republican, have both morphed so much over the last century and a half, that they've practically switched places.

In Abraham Lincoln's day, Republicans were northerners, more concerned with civil liberties and industrialization. The Democrats were all southern plantation owners. Oh, and they supported slavery, too. (Not that Republicans today support slavery, of course.) I don't know when the polarization "officially" was cemented, but no one can deny that neither party even faintly resembles what it was when first formed.

Abraham Lincoln. The Republican Party started in 1856, and was composed of former Whigs, Know-Nothings, and Federalists
