If you have a harmonal issue (such as PCOS, or thyroid issues), then losing weight will certainly help to increase fertility / ovulation. More important is going on low-carb diet (which will cause you to lose weight anyway) as that regulates production of insulin harmone / your cycle.
In any event, the doctor should diagnose first, and recommend later.

I've never had a weight issue, but for my friend her doctor told her it would be in the best interest of both her and the baby to lose weight first. She did and then got pregnant right away.

Yeah and while it may be the ideal situation, it is not a must.
If you feel your doctor is simply against overweight people in a way, then I would try to find another doctor and tell them what you want and expect from them. There are great doctors out there!

doctors are dumb.
my old doctor told me i had to lose weight no matter what i saw him for.
"i have an ear infection"
"go on a diet"
"i have a cough"
"go on a diet"
it's dumb, God made you the way you are, and you can carry a baby no matter what size you are.
good luck <3
and i'd get a second, if not more, opinions.
