The Number of the Beast, according to the Book of Revelation is: 666. It is a number that signifies complete imperfection, according to the Jews & early Christians who were big into numerology because it is half of God's perfect number of 12. That is, 6 is imperfect being half of God's perfect number and so 6 three times over signifies complete imperfection.
The question of the 616 comes from assigning the Number of the Beast to one of the historic personages alive & well when Revelation was written. This dubious honor goes to two gents from that era: Caesar Nero & his nephew & successor Domition. Assigning a numeric value to these names in the original languages of Hebrew & Greek (the early Christians were bilingual Hebrew & Greek) sums up to either 666 or 616, depending on how you count. This is where the 616 comes from, but the Number of the Beast of Revelation is: 666.

Some ancient scripts interprets the number of the beast as 616, but the bible says 666, so both are associated with the anti christ.

I remember reading an interview decades ago, with a very old evangelical missionary.Talk about the "last days" was all the rage and everyone seemed to be looking for signs of the Second Coming.
He was asked what he thought 666 represented, and he replied that he didn't know much about 666, but he did know that the world was sick sick sick and that believers ought to be busy helping heal the wounds and caring for others.
I liked that old preacher!
