Certainly... Most laptops have a standard SVGA port on them to hook up a standard CRT monitor to. All you need to do is borrow a 15 or 17" CRT monitor and plug it into the port and you should be able to see your system working as per usual.
As for networking your 2 laptops, that takes a bit more explaining. Best to use a simple hub and two network cables. Enable file sharing on the broken screen and share the root of the hard drive. Then just use windows explorer to copy over all your personal files to the new laptop!
I can do that a faster & easier way in my shop, but them, I'm a tech and that's 90% of what I do...

You may need to hook it back up to a real computer monitor. A TV may be to slow to do it this way.
Most laptops have a Fn key on them.
After you hook up the monitor and you are sure every thing is connected and working,
Hold down the Fn key and hit the monitor button. This button should look like it has a little video screen on it.
Hit it count to 5, to give the laptop and monitor, a chance to react.
If you don't see a monitor key, you may need to look at the documentation that came with the laptop.
You did not say what type of laptop it is but on
IBM the keys are Fn and F7
On My Toshiba it is Fn and F5
etc

I would take it to your local computer store to have it fixed if it is that important to you.
The reason why the broken laptop screen to TV wont work is that you have to have to set your monitor on the laptop screen as a clone so that it can project its images to the TV. Which you have to setup your video properties to do that. Without the laptop screen is next to impossible to see what your doing. Its like driving a car when its pitch black outside with no lights.

if nothing else but the screen is broken, you should be able to. there are a number of ways:
1. try burning your data to a CD or DVD
2. connect to another computer on the same network, share your data, and copy it to the other computer via ethernet
3. connect two computers directly using a USB cable (or cross-over ethernet cable)
4. Remove the hard-drive, and connect it either internally or externally to another computer (you can get external cables or enclosures for this), and then swap out data
hope this helps. good luck!

Take out the hard drive and throw it in a USB IDE/SATA enlcosure. This enclosure supports both interfaces.

Then plug it in the new PC and copy the files.
