There is a strong gas smell coming from my water heater when it turns on to heat the water in the tank. Is this normal? Should I be worried? I don't smell anything when it is resting (not heating water).

Unless you have a fan on your vent, you will probably smell some gas that is traveling up the gas vent on the top of your water heater. If you don't smell it when it is resting, then it will be the excess gas from when it first ignites. I can smell it with my water heater as well. It goes away pretty quickly though. If you don't already have one, I would suggest getting a co2 detector for your basement.

Gas Water Heater Smell

It is most likely because the flue is cold so for a few seconds the unburned gas and combustion byproducts enter the house.

It is probably not enough gas to cause an explosion and you are probably not getting enough combustion byproducts to poison you.

If you are worried about it you can have an HVAC tech or plumber take a look at it. It is possible the vent is not angled properly.

Turn it off, ventilate the room and call a registered technician! Yes you should be a little concerned. It is important to have your appliances serviced regularly and checked if they show any abnormal signs.

turn it OFF and call the gas company before you blow yourself up. The pilot light can explode.
