You first pay him back what you owed him two life times ago (a sum not less than what he owed you).

That sounds so much like what happened to me last month. Almost half-a-decade ago I bought into a scam, and when I discovered what had happened I closed the business down. I called the bank and they said they would close my account and send me a check for the balance. That didn't happen. Then about a year later someone used my account numbers to buy some piddly thing which caused an overdraft on my supposed to be closed but still open account. Then the bank made a variety of bounced check charges, and of course no one bothered to consult my account file or even the local phone book to look me up. So when they totaled a couple hundred dollars, they closed the account and sold it to a collection agency. Now, three years later, I get a call out of the blue about someone who says I owe them $500! They say they are a certain company, which I look up and is an investment house for pensions and insurance companies in Russia. Then I call my bank, which tells me what happened and they no longer own the debt but don't have a record of who bought it. I also found out who the bogus charge was to -- a supplier of plastics and related industrial materials to factories in India! When I called my lawyer, we both got a good laugh at what a fun scam this could be to call up people out of the blue and say you owe me money, pay up. I was laughing about the collector sending someone named Ivan to break my legs over this debt. Then I get a letter from the debt collector who has a slightly different name from the Russian company and it talks about some nameless "client" that they are collecting for. Furthermore, there are two amounts listed in the letter that they say that I owe, and the numbers don't match. If your Buddhist friend doesn't bit, call another and say he was the friend's wife back then, and also obligated for the same debt. Yeah, right.

Tell him, "listen... I know the sound of one hand clapping. If you pay me back, I'll tell you."

When he finally pays you back, smack him in the ear.
