People with St. John's wort have varying results, from what I have seen and my own experience. It can help to mellow people out, but dealing with serious depression, I'm not so sure.
Is the medication really not helping at all? These meds are often prescribed in too large a dose. My wife first was taking two pills of Paxil a day, which had her laying on the sofa all day! Then she tried one pill, and eventually a half pill (!) per day with far better results.
You can also supplement this with omega three fish oil capsules (2 per day) which are proven to help support the effect of anti-dep meds when they are not working well.
Another herb is Ging Quai (or something like that) which you can buy at the supermarket often. It acts more as a stimulant, and focuses your thinking a lot. Give it a try and see what you think.
I wouldn't stop your meds cold turkey. People often first for a week feel somewhat better, which is deceptive, then CRASH very hard back into depression. Then they can't see that it came from stopping meds because they say "I felt great the fist week" so be careful. Best luck.

I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from depressive disorder.
I had problems for the last 2 years (suffering!) and finally after trying all that western medicine could offer me -- I found a licensed Chinese Acupunturist and Herbalist in Nashville TN. She cured me. She inverviewed me. Examined me. stuck needles in me and gave me a Liver tonic and Kidney support chinese herbs. My blood pressure, hormones, lethergy, spasms, anxiety, and sadness disappeared! Where I live, the first visit is about $150 (including herbs), after that is is $90 per visit.
You can stop when you are better. I got better after 3 visits but my doctor told me that some people can take up to 10 or 15 visits. It all depends on how your body heals itself. She said I responded extremely well.
As far as exercise -- if you exercise and it makes you feel worse, then it is a kidney/adrenal possible thyroid issue.
Go to a professional herbalist. Please don't take St. John's wart on your own because if your depressive disorder is caused by hormones instead of stress, then it won't cure it. Your hormones have to do with your kidneys (adrenals). Please go to a professional -- they really do know what they are doing and they care about you.
Good luck!

Firstly, Im not undermining any of your feelings, but try not to self diagnose. Your mom won't laugh at you, she loves you and will want to help you. I know that its a scary experience but you should tell her. If you can't do it face to face send it in a text or write a letter and leave it where she will find it. The best and fastest way to get cured is going to the doctor and they will decide if you need medication or therapy or both. Usually both is the best answer. However when i say cured please don't expect it to be overnight. There are no magic pills. But it will happen. Best of luck x

Try to find an open minded Doctor who will assist you with conventional as well as alternative methods.
You could be right that your hormones are unbalanced--you know your body, but the best way to find out is with a test for hormonal levels. If your body is producing too much or too less of a hormone, then there could be a possibility that the imbalance could be contributing to your depression. You need to be weaned off of the medication and you will need assistance. Taking nutritional supplements, herbs could have dangerous side effects, if taking anti depressants.
I would explain to your doctor that you want to explore all options to getting well and that you want medication to be your final option or last resort. You want your doctor to see if the diagnosis is hormonal or other health issues.
Tell them that you are going to change your diet and want to try some nutritional therapy and supplements, herbs and see if that will help.
If you take anything inform your doctor.
I would talk to an herbalist or naturopath.
I would keep an open mind and be positive.
There is company that sells herbs and they have advisors and herbalists that can help you. I go to them for health issues and they will tell you what you should eat and what to avoid for free. You just purchase their products. The owner is an herbalist and had health issues also and herbal medicine helped her health issues. They are really good.

Use bio-identical hormones not synthetic hormones they are not good for you.

I think that St. John's wort is good and you could also try ginseng.
I found that creativity, art, meditation and spirituality can be effective tools in the recovery, especially for women. And finding support.

Hi Monkey. I highly recommend a book by Sherry Rogers, M.D. called "Depression Cured At Last".
Dr. Rogers is a specialist in environmental and nutritional biochemistry with over 35 years of clinical, research and teaching experience.
In this book she teaches the reader about the many, many causes of depression; how to identify the ones affecting you; and how to properly treat the CAUSE(s). The book is packed with over 700 scientific references that support the information she presents.
This is a large book, but do not let that scare you. It is easy to read and she repeats the concepts again and again to allow them to 'sink in' to the point of true understanding.
The book is available (used) at Amazon.com or from the publisher at 1-800-846-6687 (prestigepublishing.com).
Here is a quote from Martha Stark, M.D. (faculty member at Harvard Medical School) about Dr. Rogers: "As one of the few doctors I know who has the guts, the brains, and the heart for the passionate pursuit of medical truths and to say it like it is...".
Best wishes and good luck.
