i currently having 13 Red parot chillids in a 5ft x 3ft x 2ft (LxHxW) tank, using a 3ftx11/2ftx1ft sump filter (with 4 slots), using filter foam, coral chips, ceramic ring and activated charcoal as filter material. i found the water turn yellowish after changing the water in 1 week time. I m looking for better combination of sump filter material.

it may not be your filter. if you,re using one of those color enhancing feeds like for flowerhorns or the superbits of singapore, i have found that some of them will leach color into the water if used on a daily basis. try alternating with other brands of food pellets and see it the problem goes away

I have a 55 gallon tank, simular in size as your tank( a foot thinner) and I use the fluval 4 inturnal filter in my tank. I LOVE it! I will never go back to the fluval canister filters (I had a 405 in my tank before). The inturnal filters are quite, they are easier to clean then the canister ones(I must have flooded my house a dozen times trying to get the seal right!!!)

The charcoal (if refreshed every 30 days) should keep the water quite clear. I think perhaps the answer about color enhancing foods may have some merit.
