A swatch is a small piece of something, like fabric. You might take a swatch of the drapery fabric with you when you look for new carpet. They also call the hunk of carpet you can take home to see if it goes with your other stuff a swatch.

A swatch test is a test for allergic reactions. If you're going to color you hair, it's suggested you do a swatch test, or a patch test. It means you put a little of the color on your arm to see if you get a reaction to it before you put it all over your head.
