I am sort of paranoid about this.

Recently I applied for a job. Though I gave them an application they required me to write my SS# on a separate piece of paper so they could do a backround check. The manager was busy, it was a small place though-not many people, and the manager told me to leave it on the counter. Stupidly, I left it on a hidden part of the counter though I should have made sure the manager had gotten it.

Now I am frustrated with how stupid I was and know I should have not just left it there but personally handed it to the manager. I'm afraid that someone saw it or recorded it.

Can someone give me your opinion?

Paranoid is the right word :-)

We live in a goldfish bowl. Our Social Security numbers etc are floating around all over the place.

Fretting about who "might" have seen it is of no benefit. Keep an eye on your credit report, watch out for new entries that you're not familiar with - these are the best ways to protect yourself against identity theft.

If the manager told you to leave the paper on the counter, you can bet they will handle it. If they look at your application and find they don't have your ss# they will call you if interested for your #. A background check takes a couple of days, so if your uncomfortable, give a quick call and make sure they have your piece of paper.
