Most fish can exhibit aggression if mixed with incompatible tank mates. If you set up your tank properly, you will avoid many territorial and "aggressive" traits. This is really what you want. If you have "aggressive" behaviour in your tank, it's generally because of incompatible fish. Prolonged aggression in your tank will result in stressed fish. Stressed fish become susceptible to disease and eventually die prematurely.
In your 30 gallon tank, I would recommend a Green Spotted Puffer. You'll only be able to keep one, but it's about the most aggressive fish I know and you'll get a kick out of watching him attack the snails, ghost shrimp, guppies and minnows that he'll need to eat. They're like underwater puppies...smart and trainable. I think this may be just the fish for you.
Do your research. They're brackish fish and you'll need to research that a bit. But you'll love GSPs, I guarantee it.

The tank is not to small. The rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish for every gallon. First, try to get them all from the same lake in Africa (there are three major ones) any good petstore will know the types. Second, because they need a higher PH, uses lots of rocks for hiding. I also use clay flower pots. third, they are very agressive, and you may lose one or two, so everytime you put in a new fish, you need to rearrange the aquarium since they become territorial. Easiest thing I found to do is buy 2 large cichlids (such as the Frontosa) and start with them. Your aquarium needs to get balanced before you add many. There are many different 3-4 inch cichlids you can add for color later. Be easy on the feeder fish... they often add disease to water! Mix up many foods to keep their colors bright though... hope it helps! One quick note about the answer above, driftwood lowers PH, so don't use much!

Oh yea, African Cichlids are aggressive.
Oscars are also and are of the Cichlid family but grow very large and would outgrow the 30 gallon
in due time. Oscars are also very messy fish, and can't keep a nice decorated tank with them.
God bless.
p.s- I have had Oscars and 1-2 could stay in a 30 gallon for at lest 1 1/2 -2 years easy.

You can definitely do this, but just watch out for the sizes. You will want to stick to smaller, assorted african cichlids, that only get about 6 inches. That way you can have a few, and there are a lot of gorgeous colors to choose from.
I wouldn't recommend an Oscar or Midas. They're too large, obviously. You'd have to switch to a bigger tank within a few months, and Oscars/Midas usually eat every other fish in the tank. There are some relatively peaceful breeds of cichlids you can get too, though I'm not sure of the names.
When you go to buy them, check out the smaller assorted ones, and stick to five or less. When they reach full size, any more would be too much for your tank to handle, unless you did frequent water changes almost religiously. But it would still be pretty unhealthy.
Some pretty ones they have are blue with black stripes, and yellow with white and black racing stripes. They look really beautiful and would probably be a good choice. You could also maybe do just four, and get a pleco. Just make sure you don't get the one that grows to over 2 feet, as he'll most likely outgrow your tank.
I'll leave a link for you, it's just basic beginner info on cichlids. Hopefully it will help.

Elecetric yellows
Elecetric blues
Maniganos
Ramirez dwarf cichlid ram (not really agressive but beautiful)
Red devils
Theres heaps more but ill be here all day lol. Those were a few of my favourites that i own. Best of luck and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

The guy before me posted and said you could get red devils..... do you know why they are are called that it is for a reason Ive had 2 or 3 of them before and 1 of them got to a good 1' in length and he had an entire 200 gallon tank to himself so if you plan on having only him go for it. but if you want other fish i would probably recommend for a 30 gallon some convicts or electric yellows they are some of the most interesting. for a great list of fish check out www.liveaquaria .com its pretty sweet some pics aren't very accurate but the information is excellent. you might not want to go for African cichlids north and south Americans can get pretty nice. right now i have a pair of Oscars and a mated pair of convicts in a tank the convicts have caused my biggest one to go blind from being bitten on his eyes its so sad. so let me summarize this convicts are great but if you plan on breeding them or anything like that ( almost guaranteeing breeding) try not to have anything in the tank (the Oscars are about 5x the size of the convicts just so you know)

A 30 gallon tank is not large enough for most African Rift Lake Cichlids. Do some real research before you lose a bunch of fish. The one thing that you need to keep aggressive fish from any Continent, is space, gallons and gallons of space. Over 100 gallons just for starters. 200 gallons would be much better.
Most fish that are called "aggressive" (that's just a stupid way to say territorial) need space to set up their territories if there is not enough room for them to chase away intruders, they will just kill them.

Kribinis are really beautiful small African cichlids that would do well in your tank.Yellow labs are also an alright choice for you tank as they are one of the milder Malawi cichlid as far as aggression goes. You could also try rams or Bolivian rams which are smaller peaceful American cichlids.
