I guess most fans of action movies, comedy and 'high' class (lol) entertainment have encountered these people. They're so full of rage and contempt towards mass distributed films. How do you respond to them for example when they say: "you don't know what quality film making is".

Mentally excuse their rudeness then change the subject.

I'm not sure if I count as a film snob or not. I do love action and comedy, and I don't consider myself "full of rage and contempt". I've never said out loud "you don't know what quality film making is."

However, I do know lots of movie trivia, and my mind does stagger when someone compares Free Willy to the Godfather. (that was a joke, right?)

And, though I know everybody isn't born with a huge experience of movies, it is a little annoying when I run into "That movie can't be any good. It's old / b&w / 80s / silent / not computer generated." It's a little irritating when people won't even consider seeing a movie made before they were born or won't watch it with an open mind. Because, they miss out on so much.

It's also irritating when they assume other people don't really like those movies. "They're just trying to be snobs, or they're afraid to tell the truth."

Remind them that all art is subjective.
If that doesn't work, mess with them. For example - ask them which trilogy of movies had the biggest impact on American culture - Free Willy or the Godfather?
Then remember that film snobs are just insecure little weasels who cling to movie trivia as a way of feeling superior.

Tell them you like what you like. If you like it, it has to be good to some degree. Between Woody Allen and Kevin Smith, I'll choose Kevin Smith. If I want to laugh, I really want to laugh. I am going to watch something that is slapnuts funny and makes me want to roll on the damn floor. Woody doesn't do for me what Jay and Silent Bob can do.

Response:

"I must have missed that day in film class. Oh, that's right - I was making love to a woman."

(or man, as the case may be.)
