Politically, it almost tore the country apart.

Socially, it divided as no other U.S. venture up to that time had, Father against son, daughter against mother, and

Economically, it was good for the military industrial complex, who made billions off of the bodies of the soldiers, and civilians who were slaughtered.

And to the answerer above me, It was Dwight David Eisenhower, a Republican president, who first committed advisers (troops) to Vietnam, not a democrat as stated.

bgee 2001 is right and 900 is wrong. The first U.S. president to send troops to Vietnam was Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican. U.S. involvement in the war continued through the Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford administrations, so neither political party has a monopoly on the stupidity and immorality of that military misadventure.

You need to stop looking for short, easy answers to complex history questions. Do some research in your local library or online with a good search engine. There is tons of Vietnam war information available. For example, look up the Pentagon Papers or David Halberstam's book "The Best and the Brightest."

At the end of the war, US President was forced to make a statement that the war ended failure for US.

However, no political turmoil is ever heard from US perspective.

Socially every war has affected every country involved.

Economically all wars are and were costlier.

Strategically US suffered a loss as well. As it was not prepared for a Guriella war.
