~You can find "Primogeniture" in any decent dictionary. You can find Macbeth in any library, or even on line. If you haven't been assigned the play (you should read it whether it's assigned or not, just for the sake of doing so and for the entertainment and the growth of your mind) and your teacher is asking questions about it, you've got one lousy teacher. If you're asking out of curiosity, nothing I can tell you will make any sense until after you've read the play, so I won't waste your time or mine.

The word means that the first born son inherits the title of the father - a King's throne will pass to his oldest son when he dies. If he has no sons, it will pass to his oldest daughter. That's how it still works to this day a royal system like that in England. In the case of the play, Duncan had no children, so Macbeth knew that he could obtain the crown by murdering the King. The play begins with Macbeth and his friend being told a prophesy that Macbeth would be king, and that his friend would be the father of many kings. Macbeth also has no children. He has his friend killed and wants to kill his friend's son in an attempt to thwart the prophecy. But the boy (Fleance) escapes, and of course will one day become king and pass his crown down through his oldest son.
