What kind of town is it? How is education valued?

It is a small town in Alabama. They are primarily poor and uneducated. The father is considered a man of great merit and education. He is also kind, he accepted potatoes and other bartering in trade for his legal services.

I don't remember the book too well, sorry, but I think it was sort of small provential town and education was not the highest priority.
