What's done IS done, and the first thing you need to come to terms with is that you can't change your decision from a year ago. However, it is understandable that you are gutted. Despite the current economic turmoil, though, could anyone REALLY have predicted this massive kink in the exchange rates? You shouldn't beat yourself up about not predicting an unpredictable something. Furthermore, if you hadn't exchanged the money back, imagine the problems it would have caused with the lack of £ you had this year? Could you have enjoyed the year you have done without those exchanged 30 000 euros? I doubt it. That money must have been used for something and without that something this year you wouldn't have liked it similarly to how you dont like this. Yes, you would have had £6000 more pounds had you exhanged it now, but the situation and circumstance forced you to exchange a year ago, and the consequences of not doing so could have been jsut as gutting.

The Euro was introduced into circulation in 1999 or 2000. Shortly thereafter, countries previous currencies were withdrawn. Hence the Euro has been in circulation in Italy and the Lira has not for many years now.
