I recommend reading Will in the World, by Stephen Greenblatt. Greenblatt edited the Norton Shakespeare and is, simply, an expert about Shakespeare. Plus, Will in the World is accessible and fun to read. Check it out!

The guy who wrote the plays and poems attributed to William Shakespeare was a guy named William Shakespeare. A few liars and nutcases claim that somebody else -- Francis Bacon, Edward de Vere (the Earl of Oxford), Queen Elizabeth I, Chuck Berry -- was the real author, but they have no credible evidence to back them up, and no respected authority who has studied the subject takes them seriously.
