The filter is to filter out dust and particals in the intake air...what will happen is that dust will build up on the fan & coils, this isn't good because it lowers the effecance of the unit and it puts dust into your home.....you really need them in and changed on a regular bases....

Besides all of that.... the worst aspect of running your furnace or central A/C for that matter without a half decent filter, is that dust and crap will accumulate in the main blower motor for the furnace. The the motor and fan that sucks the return air back to the furnace, the air is cooled / heated and then the same motor sents it back out through your ducts. clog that baby up - and you are replacing it at a cost of between 400-1000 buckos. that $10 filter once every 3 months sounds alot better now huh?

Dust will cover the heat exchanger and cut the efficiency of the furnace. Also dust and dirt will accumulate in the ducts and registers. The dust in the heat exchanger will burn and cause a burning smell in the house. Harmless, but annoying.

I recommend 3M Filtrete filters. They're better than HEPA. Usually cost about $10 ea and they last three months. I change mine regularly and they're always filthy! All that crap would be in your lungs and messing up the works of your furnace/AC. It's smart to use and change filters regularly.

If there isn't a size on the side of the squirrel cage then measure it and get one. Your lowering the efficiency of the blower by letting it get dirty, it probably already is full of dust and grime and needs to be cleaned by now.
