This is based on gravity and if we want to find newtons do we first convert grams to kg and than times by 9.8 to get the Newtons?

Yes-

Newtons are defined as (Kg) x (meter / sec^2)

The mass must be in kg, and g is about 9.8 m / sec^2

ADDED: Yes - cm should be converted to m in order to have everything in a consistent set of dimensions

Yes because SI unit of force is N and for mass it is Kg.
SO you need to convert grams to Kg.

1 N = 1kg x 1m/s^2
