If the height you are dropping it from is not too high you could do what Jamie on mythbusters did.

Cut the paper into thin strips, link them together with small pieces of tape to make a long string. Use some of the paper to make a small cone. Tape the bottom of the egg in the small cone (make the point of the cone point down), tape the long paper string to the top of the egg. Instead of a cone you may want to do a crumpled piece of paper.

When they ask you to drop the egg, lower the egg on the paper string down to an inch or less of the ground, then "drop" it. The cone or crumpled piece of paper will take the short impact.

It's not really cheating...Technically you did "drop" the egg, you only used the long paper string to shorten the distance it fell. It's called thinking outside of the box! ;-)

Sounds like this might be some sort or science or physic's problem. If so, you seem to be missing some data. Like how high is the egg going be thrown, or released. 6 inches, 1 foot. Well, anyhoo -- You are looking for some way to cushion the shock - i.e. crumple up the paper, tape it to the egg. Think harder.

take all the paper and either cut it into little tiny strips or put it through a paper shredder. crumble up the strips of paper (like you'd use for packing material) and distribute it evenly around the egg. wrap the tape around the mess of paper and the egg to hold it all together.

Set the paper and tape aside so they can't harm the egg. Take the egg and crack it on the side of a hot skillet. Scrambled egg anyone?

I would try to tape the papers together, leave one side open, blow some air in it, then seal it with the air in there to make a cushion.

Tape it to the wall securely, it shouldn't break just hanging up there.
