Why would anyone be scared? Heaven forbid someone just smile at someone else! Jeez, is there nothing you can do without someone giving you sh** for it?

I can't really answer for every person, but I am a white woman and I smile when I pass everyone. I believe that happiness is contagious and I love when people smile back at me. I also can be in a bad mood and someone of any color or gender can smile at me and I feel a little quiver in my heart! Do other black people not smile at you? Hopefully everyone is just being friendly. I would like to believe that! You should too.

Seems like a stereotypical, generalization, and is essentially not true. May happen sometimes but not "whenever" they pass. The same could be asked in the reverse. But I would rather people are smiling than scowling. And at least where I live, you pass someone, you smile, say good morning, hi or some other pleasantry and continue on. Has nothing to do with who, what, when or where. It is just polite.

I have never noticed that before, perhaps they are smily people, you know some people smiley when they go past others and there are others who keep themselves to themselves, i truely don't think it's got anything to do with black/white. I think it's time to stop making black and white the issue. I wonder if there will ever come a time when people will wake up and just accept that we are all the same on the inside except our skin colour is different. Love each other people. PEACE.

Hi I am Malay. In my country there are chinese indians native asli tourists etc. I do occasionally see africans. No doubt different people look different. maybe you can find other people interesting too. Being white red indian or what means they can smile a they wish. Just smile at anyone. I hope you can travel outside later on and if you come to Malaysia where we all smile just do not feel weird about it. There is nothing wrong with smiling it is a virtuos deed if done sincerely.

Would you want me to just look and not do anything. I smile to be friendly and expect them to react the same way. The last time I checked we were all humans so I could care less if they are black or white or whatever.

That's a strange question. Most people where I'm from (the North East) don't even look at one another as they walk by. You must live in a much friendlier area than I. That question would never cross our minds up here. You could have 3 eyes 4 noses and 3,000 teeth and no one would even notice around this part of the country.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, umm, FOR THE SAME REASONS WHY THEY SMILE AT OTHER PEOPLE.

GEEZE! How do you know how all white people react?

And why in the world would white people be afraid of black people? Good grief! By the way some people talk, you'd think black people are a bunch of crazed lunatics.

We're human. We're all the same, but yet we're all different. Know what I'm sayin'?

I've noticed this a lot, espcially on university campuses. I'm going to make a brash assumption and say it's because they're trying to be friendly so that they're not mistaken for racists. Some of them might actually be afraid.

I've found that they're more likely to stare at the ground when passing me instead of smiling at me, though. Looks like a white guilt thing to me. I wish they didn't feel that way.

I personally would smile. In my world a smile is acceptance, friendliness, and appreciation for you being there, being yourself. Too many people have sneared at or demeaned people of other ethnicity for too long. I choose to change that one smile at a time.
