Not anymore. I used to. Here are my ten rules that helped me that I can recommend (some of these you might already be doing):
1.Take a long nice warm bubble bath with aromatherapeutic oils, candles, soft music. Shortly before bed.
2.Do not drink coffee or anything with caffeine in after 16h00.
3.Don't eat your dinner too late, at least 2 hours prior to bed time. Avoid carbohydrates with dinner.
4.Do not work too late, you need to switch off from your daily activities and that only happens gradually. Especially with insomniacs. Why do you think we are insomniacs?!
5.If you have somebody to give you a nice massage before you go to sleep, take that massage! Do not even hesitate.
6.Take breaks during the day from your normal routine, that too teaches your brain to shut off, if you never break, your brain will continue running even long after you climbed into bed.
7.Start an excersize program, even if you just walk around the block three times a week.
8.Forgive everybody... from the petty cases right up to the real problem makers. Do it for yourself and get rid of any bitterness. (I'm not saying you don't forgive, but this helped me *wink* and I am adding it in case it is relevant)
9.Never go to bed upset with anybody or anything.
10.Do an experiment... avoid sugar for a while. When I stopped using sugar, 90% of my problems disappeared, even my skin improved.

Herbs and aromatherapy:
See if you can find one of the following teas~ Lemon balm, Passion flower, Lavender, St. John's Wort, Kava Kava, (there is another one, the obvious one, but I cannot remember it now... will insert it later when I remember) You must drink the teas 2 hours prior to bedtime.
The bubble bath I mentioned early in my answer needs a few drops of essential oils. Try Lavender or Arnica. Or see if you can find a mixture blend designed to enhance sleep. But you need the bubbes too. The popping bubbles enhances relaxation. Soft (spiritual/instrumental) music is optional (you have the bubbles), but the candles are essential as they soften the light and promotes relaxation too. This bath trick works wonders for me. I do this everytime after I had a tough day and need extra help to switch my mind off.

I have a lot of trouble too! I'm 34 weeks pregnant. Tips: Put in a dvd of something you like but have seen before eg: Friends, Sex & The City, Firefly, anything that runs for hours that floats your boat. It clears your head of all of those thoughts you can't get rid of. Try a warm shower or bath just before getting into bed. Use a lavender soap/bubble bath. Have a glass of wine at dinner. Don't have too much to eat at dinner, just enough that you're not hungry but not too full. Don't have too much sugar or carbs. Go for a long walk (or run if you're not pregnant) during the day or late afternoon to really tire you out. Physically relax your body in bed, it's amazing how tense your body can get and you don't realise it. Good luck, sometimes there's nothing that helps, but I try a mix of these everyday. Think of all the others out there who feel the same...going over embarrassing moments in their heads when they just want to SLEEEEEP!

I think I am a lost cause when it comes to insomnia, actually....although I do remember times when a milky drink in the evening has helped me to sleep. Maybe I should try that again on a regular basis.

Boring AM radio chatter in the dark, a clear station without static.
Or NPR on FM, they will spend 30 minutes on obscure topics like what kind of garden vegetables are being grown by Belgian Monks, or about 80-year olds who do hang-gliding off the coast of Norway, or what's HOT in the world of collecting antique shoe-horns (complete with crowd noises in the background.)
That usually does the trick for me! A few nights of that mindless patter, and I'm gone in 16 minutes flat!

Yes, I've had insomnia all my life. It gets terribly annoying. I find that reading or listening to music helps me fall asleep faster.

I make a cup of tea, take a sleeping pill(doctor prescribed),get into bed, turn on my TV, set the timer (60 minutes) and watch old movies until I doze off.

Yes I have insomnia, and RLS,,,What helps? try to get into a good routine, or as my doc tells me good sleep hygiene,,,no naps during the day, no reading/watching tv in bed, he told me to use the bed for one thing sleep & ?...RLS, I take meds...hoped this helped, you can look up sleep disoders on the web....Goodnight ....lol

Yes. I sleep really well from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., other than that, I'm screwed; so since I work noon to 8, from home, I just sleep 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and let it go with that!

besides tylenol pm, lol.

um... listening to -calm- music gently in the background, meditation before bed to clear my mind, turn off the phones and other distractions, make sure that ive done all my hw cuz worrying might keep me up, make sure im relaxed (interpret that as you wish), etc.
