If it's anything like my old K/5 was, check the vacuum line running to the hub mechanisms. If you select 4wd, roll 10', then jack up the front end, you shouldn't be able to turn the forward driveline. If you turn one wheel, the other should turn in the opposite direction.

If nothing else, it soulds like the last thing to check.

It is hard to answer this question without knowing what year GMC you have. If you have been using your 4 wheel drive and it has suddenly started not wanting to go in something has happened to your linkage or your transfer case gearing. You may have to get your GMC or Chevy dealer to check it.

I have a geo tracker, but the way I put it in four wheel drive is by going out and locking the tires, then shifting the one stick into 4w. I don't know how to fix your problem :( perhaps you aren't doing it right?

some of these had a high low selector lever with neutral in the middle that had a habit of getting out of adjustment.
Just a hint since you never mentioned the year.

year
does it have select hubs in front ?
Try shifting into 4wd and try manualy turning the front drive shaft. if locked it is probably in the hubs . needing cleaned or repaired brocken splines. sand will stick the sliders in the hubs.

Could it be a bad hub?
Also the transfer case chain can break.
