The general consensus is that after 7 years of marriage the bonding that holds a couple together slackens from both sides by various reasons. That bonding, that to start with, is not of the best kind, in the end, again for various reasons is broken on account of the abundance to find another mate and because the society's cohesion allows people to divorce with no repercussions. Back in 30-50 years you were always aware of what the neighbor will say, and that was a strong deterrent to get a divorce for many cases.
One other point is that women are more self dependable and that gives them the final push to go for a divorce.
I will not agree with both the previous answers that men are the culprits of the act. For the above reason women too get their equal share.

In my opinion, the basic reason is that people don't have patience anymore and they easily split. Patience is what is missing from both sides, because it is easy to find someone else...
Women do not tolerate anymore what they used to put up with for years (good for them) and working makes them feel independent. In addition, now that they both work, they have to split the household, but Greeks are a bit... anatolites and they let women do everything in the house. At a certain point, women get really tired of doing everything and they finish having nerves...The couple starts fighting, they find other mates (which in Greece is easy to do) and they separate. This is one of the many, many reasons...
I'm not in the mood to analyze more and certainly I don't criticize men, though my eyes have seen much. (I used to do a job, by which I was able to see many men cheating on their wives....).
Furthermore, truth hearts and couples miss it, because one doesn't want to hurt the other. Instead, if they had a sincere relationship maybe it would work!

Actually thats weird, since I know quite a few couples that have divorced in Greece recently. It's just the way society's changing. I thinks it's because Greeks are confusing friendly casual relationships with love.

Societies are in a constant state of flux. Ideas and values do change over the years as social conditions change. So, it is not odd that relationships and institutions within a given society undergo reevaluation and change accordingly.

I personally think people are marrying for silly reasons, like the most cute person. They are also expecting too much from the marriage, like 'take care of me in all things". Marriage is hard work and lots of loyalty, and we have little of either in our society today. It always shocks me that girls are so attracted to "bad boys", and then wonder why their relationships are so abusive and troubled.

Same thing in turkey, with globalization we tend to be consumption oriented, consuming everything, including love and relationships.
I sometimes see old couples hand in hand in the streets of istanbul and ask myself what might be the secret to such a relationship?
Maybe we should stick with the good old traditions of our fathers.

The women do not put up with all the 'cR ap they used to in Greece (good for them).
They still get married here without much 'freedom' beforehand as well (especially women/girls). I know loads that haven't made it to the first year!

There are some places, for example, where in small society all parents take care of all children sharing responsibility, like in Portugal. Any other suggestions?
People seem to be confused.
