Santa died during the war of 1812. The British advance on the capital happened to coincide with Christmas. Santa, attempting to deliver presents was spotted by British scouts and shot under suspicion of being an American spy. Afterwards, the (British) soldiers that fired the fatal shots were awarded medals of bravery for their unquestioning obeisance.
To summarize, responsiblity killed Santa.
